JAMES SMITH

President

I am thrilled to be President of Warwick Law Society for 2019/20. Last year, I served as Careers Officer and helped to organise a record-breaking Careers Dinner. I was also a First Year Rep. Having immersed myself in all the Society’s activities, I can confidently say it has been the glittering centrepiece of my university experience. It is a great honour to lead our inspiring, dependable, and innovative Executive Committee. I am extremely fortunate to be working with such an exceptional team of individuals.

Vice-President

I am extremely delighted to have been elected as Vice President for the 2019/20 academic year. Last year, I acted as your Social Secretary, which focused on providing the society with an unrivalled social calendar. During my term as a Social Secretary, I succeeded in introducing new social events and won the Mentor of the Year award. This year, as Vice President, I strive to continue my innovative approach, with an increased focus on member welfare and establishing an even stronger support system for all members. It is with genuine excitement and honour that I will manage day-to-day activities, as well as keeping you all updated through our bi-weekly emails. I am truthfully grateful for this opportunity and look forward to giving my all to the society that has transformed my time at university into an unforgettable experience.

CURTIS ROSE

Treasurer

I am delighted to have been elected as your Treasurer for the upcoming year! My role mainly comprises handling the Society’s finances, interacting with sponsors, and liaising with the SU to ensure that the events we provide are both financially viable and beneficial to YOU as the members. I aim to approach the role this year from a slightly different angle to my predecessors, namely in that I intend to broaden our range of sponsors beyond the typical Corporate Law focus to ensure that as many events as possible are relevant and add value to your Warwick  experience, whilst helping you along your career paths, however diverse they may be! In conjunction with this, I will also work closely with Maaya and Angela regarding the day-to-day running of LawSoc to ensure the whole society runs smoothly.

My favourite part of LawSoc, you ask? Over my two years at Warwick, the events the society has organised have been amazing. Whether they be cheap socials or careers dinners, I have always found an opportunity to meet brilliant people and enjoy myself, whilst also adding value to my career

Publicity Officer

Hello, I’m Mila, Warwick Law Society’s Publicity Officer for 2019/2020. I’m so pleased to have been elected and I am looking forward to working with the rest of this year’s exec to bring you an amazing year with the society. My role involves coordinating with every subcommittee within Warwick Law Society to ensure our branding is cohesive and reflects the work we do (and the fun we have!). This year, I’m aiming to elevate our YouTube channel in particular with a series of videos about every aspect of life at Warwick Law School.

Careers Officers

The Warwick Law Society is dedicated in supporting our members to pursue their career ambitions whether that be in commercial law, at the bar, or some other area of law. We understand how competitive law is and our aim is to give you all every advantage we can in applying. As your Careers Officers we are truly honoured to be given the responsibility of organising the society’s career events for our members. We have an ambitious set of events lined up for the 2019/2020 academic year and we look forward to delivering them to you all. We are especially keen on building upon the Careers Dinner to make it the best it has ever been.

LAWSOC Love,

Rodney and Dhari

Our favourite thing about LawSoc last year was the quality of the events held by the Society which were heavily tailored to students interests and questions, ensuring that LawSoc was a responsive and informative society throughout the year!

Pro Bono Officer

My name is Arwa and I am Law Society’s Pro Bono officer for the upcoming academic year.
Law society has been a big part of my university career since I was a fresher so I am delighted to play an active role in shaping it. Pro Bono is something I have always been passionate about and what led me to study law. I would encourage everyone to get involved with Pro Bono in some form as there are few things as fulfilling as the knowledge that you are making a real difference in someone’s life. I look forward to seeing the society grow and get even bigger and better next year!

My favourite thing about Law society is that it truly allows you to broaden your horizons in many ways and part of this is that it has allowed me to travel to Berlin and Amsterdam so far.

Intervarsity Officer

Hi, I’m Mohammed Shahed and I am pleased to represent Warwick Law Society as their Intervarsity Officer for the 2019/20 academic year.

Warwick Law Society’s Intervarsity competition has been ongoing for about two years and is the embodiment of the society’s excellence in delivering top tier events for their members. It involves legal competitions, such as varsity mooting, alongside sporting competitions. As the Intervarsity Officer, I intend to deliver the biggest, and most interactive Intervarsity event, as well as ensuring that members have the chance to represent Warwick Law Society, and its excellence through the Intervarsity tournament.

My favourite aspect of Warwick Law Society is the inclusivity that the society fosters, alongside the friendliness of its members. I would be delighted to see many of you participating in these competitions. I look forward to meeting new members, as well as strengthening relations with the current members.

Negotiations Officer

It is an honour to serve on the executive committee of one of Warwick University’s most prestigious societies. As Negotiations Officer for Warwick Law Society, I plan to spark an interest in law and non-law students alike for the verbal art that is negotiating. This directly ties to the core reason I ran for this position: learning how to negotiate as a skill was a catalyst to my interest in pursuing law as a career. Given that the vehicle that brought about this change was none other than Warwick Law Society itself, I am happy to give back to the society that has in so many ways changed my outlook on the world of commercial law. I look forward to the many different events that will take place in 2019/2020 as well as the opportunities that will arise as a result of the brilliant minds within the society!

Academic and Welfare Officer

I am so excited to have been elected as your Academic and Welfare Officer - the Warwick Law Society is an amazing community of people that I am privileged to work alongside. From revision workshops to destress socials, I have a wide range of events in store this year! I cannot wait to get started on helping Warwick students both academically and with their welfare; these aspects are so important to student life and I look forward to seeing you at the book sale, mentoring socials and more of my events soon to come!

PRECIOUS

PRECIOUS

Non-Law Representative

During my first year, the Law Society was a great source of information. I used the society to remain aware of various opportunities I could access as a non law student. The society’s positive impact upon my first year experience led to my decision to run as the Non-Law Officer.

I believe the lack of a law degree is not a disadvantage to students. Instead, this provides an opportunity to obtain more experiences which gives one an edge in the legal industry.

I aim to provide non-law students confidence in the legal industry, and also, confidence in their abilities in being valuable members within firms and chambers regardless of not studying law. I also aim in providing law students, non legal opportunities in order to widen their experiences beyond the legal field.

Please keep an eye out for workshops in partnership with other societies, and more Non-Law student focused events

Sports Officer

Sport in Law Society is the perfect way to manage the strict regime of being a student. Through participating in friendly sporting events against other universities, to being a member of one of our sports teams, there is something for everyone in the sports department.. Not only can you find yourself competing at a high level, but you may also find new friendships that can be carried forward throughout your years at Warwick, a bonus which I have personally gained from. My role as Sports Officer is to coordinate these sporting events, ensuring all runs smoothly, but also to be a friendly figure that you can be approached by anyone at anytime, with any issue.. We, as Warwick Law Society, are a family that strive for success, and through teamwork, dedication and ultimately desire, we are sure that this sporting year will be a fruitful one.

Law Ball Coordinator

Our annual Law Ball has firmly established itself as Warwick Law Society’s biggest and most successful event of the year. The event promises to deliver an evening showcasing spectacular decoration, high-quality food and impressive entertainment. Law Ball 2020 promises to deliver another unforgettable evening. My goal is that Law Ball 2020 will continue to build on the incredible standard set by previous years. I intend to design an evening of elegance and style, treating our members to a stunning party.

I am honoured to be part of Warwick Law Society, a community that consistently offers enthusiastic support to fellow students. In the next year, I am most excited to collaborate with other passionate and committed individuals.

Obiter Dicta Editors

Mehran says she ran for Editor because she saw a lot of potential in Obiter Dicta; who says we can’t become the best student-run legal publication in the UK? Zarlasht says she ran for Editor with a vision of expanding the readership and modernizing Obiter Dicta.

We take pride in being a part of LawSoc because it’s a lovely community filled with support, and we’re so excited for the plans we have set in place for this year. We’re going to be adding a podcast (for those of you who prefer to listen to your news) and releasing an issue in both terms! We’re looking forward to hosting talks on legal issues by influential speakers who are at the forefront of their field, including our own lecturers. So writers, get writing, and everyone else, feel free to reach out to find out more about how you can contribute to Obiter Dicta.

Masters and Mistress of Moot

We are Bekki Dunn and Kaneeka Kapur, your Mistresses of the Moots! Our job is to facilitate mooting activities this year, including our three annual competitions, as well as external competitions. This year we are focusing on making mooting more accessible for everyone, particularly first years; we are hoping to do this by running an interactive ‘How to Moot’ workshop, developing the ‘Moot Mentor’ scheme, as well as holding a non- competitive mooting competition. In addition to this, we are also hoping to provide development opportunities for more experienced mooters by hosting workshops with coaches and barristers and holding more ‘friendly’ inter- varsity moots.

We are particularly looking forward to meeting the new first years, at both our mooting events and other LawSoc events! Both LawSoc and mooting have been an integral part of our university lives thus far, and we can’t wait to help enhance the student experience for other members too.

Our favourite thing about Law Society is, of course, mooting!

Social Secretaries

Being one of the largest societies on campus requires Warwick Law Society to have a unparalleled social calendar for its members. By working closely with our members over several years, we’ve collected large amounts of feedback and conceptual proposals, resulting in a varied social calendar which reflects the diversity of our members. We’re proud of our ability to organise events which promote inclusivity and welcome members from all walks of life.

Your Social Secretaries for 2019-20 are Tahreem Khan and Maya Viswa. We’re excited to help Warwick Law Society diversify its social calendar even further and provide members with opportunities to destress. We will also recruit a subcommittee at the start of Term 1.

At the start of each year, our Social Secretaries organise “Meet the Exec”, which helps incoming students to integrate into the society. The aim of this event is to present every executive member, and clarify what their position in the society, to our new first-year students. After the event, first-year students have the opportunity to socialise with each other and the executive committee over drinks and nibbles.

The highlight of our social calendar is Pub Golf. Pub Golf is a social event in which members are split up into various teams and engage in a friendly competition whilst visiting a wide range of local bars. Attendees are provided with a free T-shirt, free entry to a night club and the opportunity to create life-lasting relationships with fellow members. This year the event was an enormous success, selling out in less than 4 hours!

Throughout the rest of the year, our Social Secretaries host diverse events, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, which allow members to meet other members and take a break from their studies. For instance, we have an annual “Christmas Party” where members come together to celebrate the start of the holidays and reflect on Term 1.

Warwick Law Society is proud to present a Socials team that will provide you with a busy and diverse social calendar.

Tour Secretary

I am honored and thrilled to be the tour secretary of Warwick’s Law Society this year! With this role, I have the responsibility of executing two unforgettable tours across the year, and I plan to do just that! As a fresher, going on tour was the perfect way to mingle with the different years, build connections and make lifelong memories. Everyone in Law Soc is extremely friendly and welcoming, so you will be sure to make many new friends too. Both the domestic and international tours will be incredibly exciting, with lots of going out, letting loose and maybe even a few surprises along the way...do join us on tour, you won’t regret it!
